Lately I have been thinking a lot about what it means to be a mother and the importance of the roles that mothers play. Mothers are monumentally vital to adoption everywhere! This seems like common sense but it’s been more and more apparent to me as I’ve watched and talked with birth mothers, adoptive mothers, hopeful, future mothers and outstanding women who have always played some of the roles that mothers play.
Today I visited the Jacob Spori Art Gallery and viewed the work of Nick Bontorno. I took a photos of the piece above entitled “Mother and Daughter.” It reminds me of my mother, who gave birth to me 23 years ago and has raised me to be kind and courageous. She is my rock, my best friend and confidant.
What does it mean to you to be a mother? And if it applies, how has motherhood been defined in your own adoption, adoption of your children or placing of your birth children?
